The topic

Passive constrained-layer damping uses a viscoelastic layer between stiff face sheets to dissipate vibration energy. The project studied the nonlinear transient response of such panels with composite laminate face sheets.

The numerical model is a geometrically nonlinear finite-element formulation (first-order shear deformation theory, Green–Lagrange strains, Hamilton's principle), implemented in MATLAB. The study analysed load–displacement paths and displacement fields of simply supported and clamped panels.

Scope

What I did

  • Reviewed the literature
  • Contributed to formulating the model together with my teammate
  • Corrected and debugged the MATLAB code
  • Evaluated and interpreted the results
  • Proof-read the report

What I did not do

  • My teammate developed the finite-element model and wrote and ran the MATLAB program
  • This is an academic numerical study, not professional composite design work
